New Delhi: - Deputy Chief of Mission M. Ashraf Haidari received and met with a group of Afghan martial artists, who participated in Tang Soo Do contests in the 6th GTF International Tang Soo Do Championship-2014 on November 8-9, 2014 in India. As in the 2012 international championship matches, they earned Afghanistan this Championship’s top prize, including several gold and silver medals. Mr. Haidari warmly congratulated them on their best performance and the medals they won. “Followed by our victories in the South Asian Football Federation Cup-2013, Olympic Games, and International Cricket Cup matches, your outstanding success demonstrates to the world that despite decades of war and ongoing violence imposed on our people, Afghanistan is fast standing on our own, and this is made possible by you, our youth who are the hope and future of Afghanistan,” Haidari told the winners.
Mr. Babrak Sharifi, Secretary General of Afghanistan Kung-Fu Federation, accompanied the team, and said that Tang Soo Do—a Korean martial art promoted by Hwang Kee that has its roots in various martial arts, including taekkyeon and Subak—is quite new in Afghanistan. But it is a sport that has attracted many marshal artists across Afghanistan. However, he lamented about a lack of resources for promotion of sports and Afghan professional athletes, and called upon India and the international community as a whole to support Afghanistan’s National Olympic Committee. “We will get many more medals in this and other sports in upcoming Olympic Games, only if our youth had the means and peace of mind,” said Mr. Sharifi. The Championship was organized by Tangsoodo Federation of India, affiliated with Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India.
